Why do I like daylilies?
Because they are interesting, never boring, and always capable of surprising you!
First of all,
they are so diverse that it’s hard to believe they belong to the same species – from round ones with frills to long-petaled spiders, from single-color blooms to multi-colored, painted varieties.
Secondly, they are different every day, even on the same plant. Yesterday, it was darker, today it’s lighter, yesterday the flowers were smaller, today they are larger. It’s exciting to go out in the morning and see how each one is blooming today.
Thirdly, hybridizing them is fascinating. Pollinating different varieties and seeing what comes out of it. For example, pollinating a round frilled variety with a spider one and then, when the hybrid flowers bloom, walking into the garden in the morning and thinking, "So, what did we get here?"
Fourthly, they are simply divinely beautiful. All of them! You just want to admire them for a long time, absorb and remember this beauty. You feel like taking lots of photos to capture the moment for many years to come. Modern varieties are drastically different from those bred even at the beginning of the 2000s. They are becoming larger, more intricate, frilled, and toothy. Every flower is a work of art.
